NHS funding varies by Integrated Care Board. Where it exists, waits of 6-18 months are common, and many patients are excluded on age, BMI or because a partner already has a child.
Donor eggs are the sharpest difference. UK donors are non-anonymous and identity-releasing at 18, and waiting lists commonly run 12-24 months. In the EU destinations below, donation is anonymous and waits are usually 1-8 weeks.

Before you enquire: a UK patient checklist
- Ask your UK clinic or GP for a copy of your AMH, FSH, antral follicle count and any previous cycle notes before you enquire abroad.
- Ask each clinic for a written, itemised quote: consultation, monitoring scans, anaesthesia, ICSI, blastocyst culture, freezing, storage and medication.
- Confirm how many trips are required and whether local monitoring scans in the UK are accepted (most clinics accept them, which cuts one trip).
- Budget £250-£600 per trip for flights and £70-£120 a night for accommodation for two people.
- Check whether your UK GP will prescribe or supervise stimulation medication, as buying it at the clinic is sometimes cheaper and sometimes not.
- For donor treatment, ask whether the donor is anonymous under that country's law and what information your child can access later.

Is IVF abroad safe for UK patients?
In the EU destinations we list, clinics are licensed by a national regulator and work under EU tissue and cells law, and many labs follow ESHRE guidelines. North Cyprus (TRNC) sits outside the EU, so donor screening, traceability and record-keeping requirements differ there. The real risk is choosing an unvetted clinic rather than travelling as such.
Can I have monitoring scans in the UK and treatment abroad?
Yes. Most clinics abroad run a satellite protocol: your baseline and stimulation scans are done locally in the UK by a private clinic or scanning service and emailed over, and you travel only for egg collection and transfer. That usually reduces you to one trip of 5-7 days.
Are donor eggs anonymous if I travel from the UK?
In the Czech Republic, Greece, Spain, Latvia and Poland, donation is anonymous under national law, so your child cannot obtain identifying donor information later. In the UK, donors are identity-releasing at 18. That legal difference matters for many families and should be a deliberate decision, not a side effect of the price.
Will my UK clinic support treatment abroad?
Many will provide records, prescriptions and monitoring scans, but they are not obliged to. Ask before you book. HFEA registration does not extend abroad, so any complaint or dispute is handled under that country's own regulator.
