A single own-egg IVF cycle in the United States commonly runs $15,000-$25,000 with medication, and PGT-A, freezing and storage are usually billed on top.
Insurance coverage depends on your state and your specific plan. Where a mandate exists it often caps cycles or excludes medication, and self-funded employer plans are frequently exempt from state mandates altogether.
Donor-egg cycles in the US routinely reach $30,000-$45,000. In Europe, donation is anonymous, donor compensation is capped by law, and donor programmes are a fraction of that cost, which is why donor treatment is the single strongest reason American patients travel.

Before you enquire: a US patient checklist
- Request your full cycle records from your US clinic: AMH, FSH, antral follicle count, prior stimulation protocols and embryology reports.
- Ask for a written itemised quote in euros and confirm what is excluded, especially medication, anaesthesia, ICSI, PGT-A and embryo storage.
- Ask about a satellite protocol: monitoring at a US clinic, travel only for retrieval and transfer. That is usually one trip of 7-10 days.
- Plan embryo or gamete shipping early if you intend to bring embryos home; it needs a licensed courier and paperwork on both sides, and it is not cheap.
- Budget $700-$1,400 per person for transatlantic flights and $90-$150 a night for accommodation.
- Check whether your insurer will reimburse any element of overseas treatment. Most will not, but some diagnostics and medication are claimable.
FAQ: IVF abroad from the US
How much does IVF abroad cost from the USA?
European clinic fees for own-egg IVF are typically a quarter to a third of US pricing. Once you add medication, transatlantic flights of roughly $700-$1,400 per person and 7-10 nights of accommodation, most US patients land between $6,000 and $10,000 all-in per cycle, against $15,000-$25,000 at home.
Why is IVF so much cheaper in Europe than the US?
Three reasons: clinic pricing is not set against an insurance reimbursement market, donor compensation is capped by law rather than negotiated, and staffing, facility and malpractice costs are far lower. Lab technology, culture systems and embryology standards are broadly the same.
Is European IVF regulated to a standard Americans would recognise?
EU member states regulate fertility treatment under national law plus the EU tissue and cells directives, which set requirements for donor screening, traceability and reporting. That is a different framework from the FDA and CDC reporting regime in the US, not a weaker one. North Cyprus (TRNC) is outside the EU and does not fall under those directives.
Can I bring embryos back to the US?
Usually yes, with a licensed cryo-shipping company and the right consents and screening paperwork from the origin clinic. Arrange it before your cycle rather than after, because some screening tests must be run at the time of retrieval to satisfy US import requirements.
Is donor egg IVF in Europe anonymous?
Yes in the destinations we list. Donation is anonymous under national law in the Czech Republic, Greece, Spain, Latvia and Poland, so identifying information is not released to the recipient or the child. If open-identity donation matters to your family, that is an argument for treating at home.
